Keeping in touch with the world .. Getting the Gist

There has been a mega change in the way we network online in the last 12 months.

The odds are that many of your online friends used to visit the same social network most days. You used the internal mail system to keep in touch, commented on each others blogs, joined in on club debates, all on a single site.

It still is the easiest way to start networking , but once you know the ropes you are off on an adventure of your own visiting sites you like and leaving messages, blogs and comments along the way.

Twitter was, in my opinion, the catalyst for this movement away from single site networking, and the increasing number of FREE networking sites. With twitter you can send messages publicly or privately to the people you wish instantly.

So how on earth do you keep in touch with your online friends, if you have no clue where they are networking on any given day. You certainly are not going follow them by visiting all known networks regularly.

So the odds are you bump into them occasionally when you are online at the same time.

You could be missing the action.

Now how can we bring everything back together again, without changing our networking habits, so that we stay on closer touch with our networking friends.

Step 1 .. bring everyone together under one roof, without them having to do anything ..

Take all your LinkedIn, FaceBook, Twitter, Plaxo and Ecademy contacts – export the data and import into System X. This will take time, but once you have set it going you can leave it.

Where our friends have a presence on more than one network , combine the details from each to give a grand summary.

A single profile created from all the separate networks, showing their email messages, tweets, facebook postings and blogs via RSS.

Step 2 Organise them ..

If you have 15,263 contacts, System X can handle it but to follow everyone is information overload ..

So you rate them from 0 TO 100 in order of importance, but you do not rate everyone .. start with

  • 100 Family
  • 90 Close network = online friends
  • 80 Interesting people

Now there is no need to do this all at once, it can be done a little each day.

Then you can also add tags where you wish … met, customer, supplier, good egg etc .. one person may have several tags.

So you can now get System X to filter by importance or by tag.

If you do these two steps, keep refining things, then System X will scour the net and keep each person’s profile up to date.

So with a little work from you, no need for action on your friends part, you can now from one webpage, see exactly what is happening in their online world.

There is no longer a need to both be active on one social network in order to stay in touch with the people that matter .. System X does all that and is growing more powerful by the day.

Have you got the GIST?

Time to come clean, System X already exists .. it is called Gist … https://beta.gist.com

Before I forget, Gist send you an update email weekly, in case you missed anything

Thank you Steven, I think I may get the “gist” of it yet :)

I am sure you will Sarah , you already have the zest :)

Setting up takes a bit of effort , but once done the system works surprisingly well.

Interesting but posting that screenshot may annoy a couple of people. Especially the one who has a 1 rating. How long does it take to set up?

  • http://vamoss.tumblr.com/ stevenhealey

The figures on the left hand side in the first screenshot , are the number of postings in the last seven days ., not the ratings.

The ratings are shown in the second screenshot , and everyone shown has high rating.

It takes about two hours to set up , and you only need to do it once.

Can't you tell I didn't have a close look. Two hours eh? Mmmm!

Close look .. no .. but you got the gist.:)

How long it takes , depends on where you take the contacts from .. once you give it either a csv file with you contacts or link it to your accounts , it then runs in the background .

Facebook , Twitter and GMail are by linking the account.

Ecademy and LinkedIn are via CSV files exported from the sites.

    Steven -

Thanks for the article! I'd like to suggest a few things for people to get started more easily in Gist.

    1) Read this blog post on the top 3 ways to get started: http://blog.gist.com/2010/04/13/3-ways-to-get-s… — it points out the contacts you are following, the context in which you are interacting with them, and the content being published by and about them.

    2) Give it a try — connect an email and/or Facebook account for best results, and then play around with the product for 20-30 minutes to get a feel for it

    3) Ask questions — we're here to help you at @gist.com" rel="nofollow">feedback@gist.com.

Again, thanks for writing the article and thanks to all of you who try Gist!

Don't think Ecad will be imported for me. Don't want to get spammed ;-)

I can totally understand your reticence .
