The Bath-Time Guru

I recall a satsang – don’t worry if you don’t know what that means, MS Word doesn’t so I’ll start again! I recall a meeting addressed by a man called Florian who talked about a “shit guru.” This was someone, he explained, that taught spirituality in India by finding a pile of shit and sitting in it. “That’s all he did” explained Florian as everyone laughed, and I realised how such a practice would be an awesome challenge… I could not do it, so someone who could, wow… Image via Wikipedia You’ll see why this came back to... There’s more to this teaching lark…

Many years ago I gained a PhD in Geography. I spent three (long) years of my life (and even longer ones for my wife!) looking at stuff in the environment which may (or may not) have increased the likelihood of children developing leukaemia. I used some pretty sophisticated statistical methods and I even developed some of my own. There’s not much I couldn’t at one time have told you about FORTRAN random number generator algorithms (fairly random but not perfect) as applied to Monte Carlo Simulation (easy but labour-intensive!). Of course what a PhD in Geography means in the real world is... [Read the full story]

The Tyranny of Closure
September 1, 2010 · View Comments
It’s important to “get closure” according to many in the coaching and counselling worlds. Closure is the key to being able to move on. A failure to achieve closure is as likely as anything to hold you back in your personal journey. If you cannot get closure on those past relationships, pains or events then you won’t be able to move forward. It’s all about “letting go of the past”, you see. Image via Wikipedia Why? Why must people let go? Why, when a loved one dies, or a relationship ends, must a person be encouraged to let go of that person? What’s wrong with allowing... [Read the full story]

Put on the tie, put on the job
August 31, 2010 · View Comments
My job comes with a tie. By that I don’t mean my boss provides one (I own the company and I can assure you I don’t buy myself ties out of company funds). What I mean is that there is a certain level of formality required by the people I work with and, basically, that means a tie. Image via Wikipedia I’ve noticed more and more, recently, that I put the job on with the tie. My level of focus changes and my humour changes when I Put On The Tie. “Put on the tie, put on the job.” Or more accurately, “Put on the tie put on the job’s persona”. I’m sure it’s something a lot of... [Read the full story]

How to ride a bike: track racing
August 24, 2010 · View Comments
Team GB dominated the track cycling at the Olympics, as they did the World Championships earlier this year and we won Gold in the Team Sprint event with Chris Hoy, Jamie Staff and Jason Kenny stuffing the French by a full half-second. So – what’s track racing all about? Image via Wikipedia First you need a track – a velodrome. These vary in length, the shorter the length the steeper the banking on the curves – reaching up to 50 degrees on a 250m track. The surface on an indoor track will be ultra-smooth wood – which is great but a spill can result in splinters flying... [Read the full story]

Life from 15 feet up (5)

Have you ever wondered what life on the roads would be like if LGVs did not overtake each other at any and every given opportunity, and a law was passed to prohibit it? Image by ☺ Lee J Haywood via Flickr Picture the scene as it is currently, lorries making serene, stately, steady progress along the major arterials of our country, occasionally pulling out to overtake a marginally slower lorry, a jaunty signal to thank the lorry being overtaked for ‘flashing me’ back in, perfect harmony really, on we all go. Picture the scene if overtaking was forbidden. No overtaking, long queues... [Read the full story]

Should men shave their chest hair? I did a quick straw poll and acquaintances are divided about the issue: in a sample of 20 people (ten of each gender), it comes in as exactly 50/50. Image by amacedo via Flickr The proponents of shaven masculine chests, both men and women, cite aesthetics, muscle definition, hygiene...

The silly season, as far as networking and generating business is concerned, is nearly over, kids back to school next week and I can get on with what I love doing (don’t tell the wife & kids). However even when you are on holiday you think about things in your business and occasionally have some lightbulb moments....
